# Chapter 3: A Queen's Gambit

Since arriving on Earth, the Queen Bee of Honeyland has been busy. With her plan to recruit Beekeepers to manage Hives across the universe well under way, she had to think over the next steps. How would they make their way back towards their original home?

Recently, the existence of a portal that leads to another universe has been brought to her attention. Her Majestic Stripefulness took her lead scientific advisor, Dr. Loretta Thorax, and her top general, Air Marshall Zzzupata, to go and investigate further. Upon arrival, the three of them studied the portal intensely.

“Your Majesty,” Zzzupata said. “I strongly recommend that we send an advance scouting force through this portal to conduct reconnaissance. We have no way of knowing what’s on the other side without that.”

Dr. Thorax absently squinted at the portal, “That is sound advice, my queen. In the meantime, allow my team to investigate the properties of the portal. We need to know if it has any limitations.”

The Queen agreed and left them to it. “Report to us as soon as either of you learn anything. And limit the scouting mission’s time, we need as many answers as possible, as soon as they can!” She said, as she turned to fly back to the Hive.

While waiting to hear from them, the Queen called a meeting of her most trusted advisors in the war room. They had to create a plan!

“Your Majesty. I present our scouting reports.” The Air Marshal was proud of his troops. He’d gathered his best and buzziest. Given the time constraints, they had learned a lot about this new universe!

“Ah yes. Thank you Air Marshal. We are grateful for your efficiency. This report will be of great service to the kingdom. Please thank your brave scouts on behalf of the crown.” The Queen gathered the report together, a weighty file considering the time frame! “Doctor, anything about the portal?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. We have discovered a number of useful things about the portal. Most importantly, it will only let Genesis Bees from Honeyland through. However, all Eggs are able to travel with no limitations.” replied the doctor, removing her glasses.

“Thank you Doctor, our thanks to your team. That is an interesting development. It will change our plans significantly. Please, will both of you attend a strategy meeting tomorrow? We have lots to discuss.”

\*\* the next day \*\*\*

Walking out of the war room in the Main Hive, The Queen’s advisors were in pairs, heads bent together in conversation. All of them were discussing the strategy meeting and the Queen’s bold plan.

“She’s right, you know,” one said. “As talented as the Beekeepers have been so far, not every Hive is ready to make the journey. Only Beekeepers who have reached level ten with their Hive are likely to be ready enough.”\
Her companion hummed in response, “Perfectly wise of her. And by allowing for exceptions for those that have found other ways to prepare for life in this new universe, Co-. Co-. What was it again?”\
“Cocarro. It sounds fascinating! I would love to go and see it myself if I’m being honest. I wish I was a Genesis Bee.”\
The two of them carried on in earnest as they disappeared around a corner.

Another pair were animatedly talking, forelegs waving around. “So all Hives are to be monitored and each Hive’s guide to be sent instructions once a Hive’s keeper has reached level ten?”

“That’s right. Those instructions will tell the Beekeeper to go and speak to a somebee in the kingdom, the one who let Her Majesty know of the portal’s existence.”

“And they need a code word?” the first asked. “Did she tell us what the code word was?”

“No,” his friend said. “They will only find the code word once they have read the instructions. Giving the code will earn them directions to the portal, where they will have to defeat the Queen’s guardian!”

“Our wise Queen is at it again huh? Of course it makes sense to have a guardian to prevent it from being used by Beekeepers who are not yet ready for the challenges found in Cocarro.”

The pair’s voices faded as they went. Back in the war room, the Queen sat in her chair, staring down at the table full of reports and discoveries. Given all that they had found, she hoped all that she was doing was right for her subjects. She hoped that they would be strong enough for the journey ahead. They had to be, because, somewhere out there, the Contagion still existed. The next time they met, she knew the Bees had to be ready.
