# Chapter 13: DJ Sammy learns about Sieging

DJ Sammy Sprinkles wandered the halls of his Hive and wondered what he’d be doing today. One of the great joys of being part of Vero’s Hive was that you never knew what task you’d be required to do. Each day was a new adventure, and Sammy was so glad that he got to travel the world in the service of his Hive. He thought about the new world that he’d been born into, Cocarro. Despite being a born native, he still knew so little about his home world.

He was also very glad that, as a Cocarro native, he wasn’t required to fight against Icerax. Just the stories from the other Bees had caused him to shake in his wings. As he rounded the corner near the living quarters, another Bee slammed into him and they both went flying. Dusting himself off, Sammy looked up and saw Kostas, one of the Hive’s messenger Bees, and a pile of papers. Kostas was already giving an apology, “So sorry. I didn’t see you there.” At that point, he looked up and saw who he’d run into. “Oh! DJ Sammy, how’s it going?”

“Don’t worry, Kostas, easily sorted. It’s good to see you, my Bee. What are you doing with all this?” Sammy gestures to the papers scattered around them.

“Oh, these are some research papers that the generals have asked for. It’s something about the history of the Lands of Cocarro. Waaay beyond my paygrade.” Kostas replied with a chuckle.

DJ Sammy started to gather up the papers, “Here, let me help you with that.” As he grabbed one, a heading leapt out at him, ‘The Nomadic Practices of Cocarran Tribes’. He took a closer look at the paper and read, ‘In order to keep peace with the native tribes, we Bees must respect their nomadic traditions. This means that Land ownership must be treated differently than the current process on Earth.’

His antennae quivered, this was sure to be an interesting read. “Hey, Kostas? Do you want me to deliver these for you? I’m sure you’ve got other jobs that need to be done and I’m free right now.”

Kostas looked up from his pile of papers, “What? Are you sure? It’s not restricted, so there’s no reason why you can’t…”

“Yeah, absolutely. I’m not busy right now and I wouldn’t mind having a look at these myself. I have a feeling it’ll be useful for some future missions.” Sammy glanced down again at the paper he was holding, “How soon do they need to be delivered?”

Kostas was busy gathering up the dropped papers. “Hmm? Oh, ideally by the end of the day. Just make sure they definitely get them and don’t mess up the order. Here.” He shoves the now gathered and orderly papers into DJ Sammy’s hands. “Thanks Sammy, I’ll owe you one.”

“Don’t mention it, see you around Kostas!” Sammy took the papers and Kostas flew off down the hallway on his next delivery.

Sammy went off to find a quiet corner so that he could study the files.

When Sammy looked up again, he was shocked to find that the sun was setting. He’d been reading about Cocarro Land history for hours! He’d learned so much and was excited to dive into some Missions for the Hive. He was especially enthusiastic about the prospect of Sieging and holding a Land for Beekeeper Vero. After hearing from some of the other Bees about the Lands that Vero owned, he was surprised to find out that Cocarro Lands weren’t owned by anybody. But, reading the documents from Kostas had shed a lot of light on the matter.

It seemed that the native Cocarro tribes had strong feelings about Land ownership, and had defended those feelings with violence when the Bees had first arrived. In order to make peace, the first Bees took some time to understand why the locals were being violent. They learned that the tribes carried out nomadic practices, and Land ownership was, to them, a transient concept at best. Additionally, with Cocarro’s poisonous atmosphere, staying on a Land for too long resulted in falling sick and needing to be taken away to safety.

With that in mind, the tribal practice for holding a Land became a mini war game. For the tribes, different war bands would take turns competing to hold the Land, eventually having to give it up as their party grew weaker with the poison. In order to respect the local traditions and keep peace with the two tribes, Queen Apisara has declared that the Beekeepers should adopt similar practices. Allowing for a team of Bees, led by a Queen, to hold a Land and harvest its resources, this new practice will be called Sieging.

Sammy was intrigued! He loved the sound of competing for resources against the other Bees and Hives. It sounded like the perfect way to maintain the peace with the locals but also grow and strengthen the Honeyland Hives. He really hoped he’d be selected for a Siege Mission sometime soon. He grabbed all the files and papers and put them in order, best to go and deliver them before any Bee starts wondering where they are.
