# Chapter 12: The First Trial of Icerax

Icerax read over the letter from Apisara again. And again. He sighed and pinched his brow between two massive claws. It made sense, but he didn’t have to like it. He looked up at the small messenger Bee waiting for his response and, Icerax noted with amusement, trying valiantly to hide his nervousness. “Zippy, are you scared of me? You have nothing to fear, truly. Besides, you’re on official business from Her Majesty and you are a guest.”

Zippy visibly swallowed before replying. “All of which you said is absolutely right, Mister Icerax, sir, but that doesn’t change the fact that you ARE a dragon. A very big, very fierce dragon. A very big, very fierce, UNDEAD dragon. I know what that letter says, your dragon-ness, and I am very glad that I don’t have to fight you.”

Icerax chuckled at the little Bee’s bravery in saying all of that to his face. “So you know the contents of this letter do you? You know that Apisara is asking me to test Bees and Beekeepers through a trial of combat? You know that I am being asked to do this once a week, and you know that those who are victorious will be given a portal keystone as a reward and be able to use it to access Cocarro afterwards?”

Nodding confidently, Zippy said, ‘Yes, I read all the letters that I am asked to deliver, in case the parchment is damaged and I have to relay the message myself. It’s one of the most important skills that us messenger Bees have. I know all about what Her Majesty is asking of you, Icerax. And I think that it is a very important task!” Zippy didn’t *quite* stop his voice from squawking at the end.

“You’re right, you’re right.” the bone dragon sighed. “It’s an honor really, but I can’t help but feel like it will be tiresome. At least it’s only once a week, and it makes sense, with the portal below my lair and all. At least she asked me nicely, I would have been duty-bound to obey in any case. Please, go back to Apisara, and let her know that I accept her request. Now, buzz on. I have to prepare for my incoming guests. I’m going to have to make it interesting somehow.”

Zippy saluted the dragon and leapt into the air. “I sincerely hope never to see you again, sir dragon. I shall carry your message to the queen. Good luck with your task!” He shot off out of the cave.

> \*\*\*several weeks later\*\*\*

The air is filled with the sounds of battle. Wings humming furiously, Bee after Bee dives towards the gigantic dragon. His breath sprays a cloud of crystalized vapor towards the oncoming phalanx. Other Bees have claimed their positions and are raining missiles upon the dragon from a distance. His wings beat once and a gale sweeps across the battlefield. One team hasn’t secured their position well enough and is sent tumbling across the earth.

Over two days, the trial rages on. Reinforcements are sent to the front lines as others are knocked out of battle and sent back to their Hives. Eventually, as the second day draws to a close, Icerax roars with triumph. “Enough! You think you’re ready to go through the portal?! You can’t even defeat me in cooperative combat! You aren’t prepared for what lies ahead. Go, regroup and try again later,” he pauses for a moment. “Actually, wait. I am a dragon after all, it takes a lot to actually defeat me. Some of you performed well enough, you shall pass my trial.”

The great dragon draws in a breath and flexes his wings just so. A section of ground in front of him raises up and several Bees begin to glow with the blue light of Icerax’s magic. “If you are glowing, group with your Hive mates and climb onto the platform. Your Queen has sent a messenger with your reward.”

Zippy steps up and unfurls a parchment, “Congratulations Bees and Beekeepers! Even though you did not defeat the mighty Icerax, he has determined that some of you are worthy and you have passed the trial. You have earned a Coccaro Portal Stone and some Cocarro Crystals.” He waves to his left where a table full of purple crystals sat, alongside a pile of stones softly glowing with blue light. As the Bees were watching, the stones floated into the air and drifted towards them, one for each Bee. Similarly, the crystals also floated into the air, but drifted towards the Bees in groups of various sizes.

On the hillside behind Icerax stood a circular stone structure. As the Bees grasped the Portal Stones, a low, long thrum reverberated out from it and the middle of the circle sprung to life with glowing plasma. Icerax stepped to one side as Zippy continued, “Your Portal Stones are active and through that portal lies Cocarro. Well fought, Bees and Beekeepers! The Queen wishes you continued luck as we all work to reunite the Honeyland universes. Zzub Zzub!”
