# Chapter 2

Recruited. By the legendary Wingbeats of Queen Apisara! Beelinda could hardly believe it. “M-me? But, why?”

“What, you don’t think we watch everyone at MU? It’s our main source of recruits, they got me involved in my first few months. But then, I am also a legacy recruit. Anyway, I’ve been keeping a close eye on you in class, they always ask us to watch for potential recruits. You’re one very impressive Bee, Beelinda. Academically, you’re very accomplished, you’ve shown you have an ability to handle pressure, and, as I noted in class, you’re observant. All of that makes you a prime candidate for recruitment. Questions?” He looked at her expectantly.

Beelinda was still reeling, “So many. How long have you been monitoring me for recruitment? What does my academic ability have to do with anything? What about combat, don’t you ever have to fight enemy agents? I don’t know anything about combat…”

As she paused to take a breath, Tarnathien laughed. “Ok ok, I figured you’d have some. You should save them, I’m taking you to my mentor for a proper introduction. I’ll answer a couple of those though. Firstly, doing well in school shows that you have the capacity to onboard varied information and apply it correctly. Not to mention some of the critical thinking that we have to do, constantly evaluating the information we discover. Sometimes you’ve got to make a near instantaneous decision on what’s important or not, and you’ve got the skills to do that. As for combat, ideally we don’t ever find ourselves in the position where combat is necessary, but we will make sure you’re equipped to handle yourself should anything happen, don’t you worry.

As they’d been talking, Tarnathien had been leading her out of the old equipment room and through some dimly lit corridors. He continued, “My teacher, or mentor I guess, has been waiting for me to bring in my first recruit. That’s where we’re going now. He has to clear you for any further information, so just let those questions build up. I can’t tell you any more right now, sorry.” He looked apologetic, so Beelinda decided she’d let him off for a bit.

She focused instead on their surroundings while pondering everything she’d ever heard about the Wingbeats. About five minutes later, she realised something, “Hey, we’ve passed that tapestry already haven’t we?”

Tarnathien had the grace to look sheepish, “We’ve, ah, been taking a deliberately confusing path. Can’t let every potential recruit know how to find us. If you join up and swear in, you’ll be shown the true path.”

Again, it made sense to Beelinda, so she nodded her understanding and they kept going. Eventually they reached a well-lit hallway where Tarnathien brought them to a stop. He raised his hands to his mouth and made an unusual bird-like sound. A second later, four guardsbees stepped forward out of the walls, as if they had been one with the stone. Beelinda could hardly believe her eyes, she would have sworn that the hallway was empty. One of the guards approached Beelinda and efficiently searched her and her bag, announcing that she was clean before stepping back into position.

The two of them proceeded past the guards and stopped halfway down the corridor. Tarnathien looked at Beelinda and grinned. Beelinda didn’t know what he was grinning at, “What?” She looked around them, but couldn’t figure out why they’d stopped at this point of the corridor. There was nothing here.

Tarnathien just kept grinning, then tapped his head, and then his nose. Beelinda then realised, this was a test. There was clearly something here to find. She stepped back and took a proper look at the hallway. They were in a well-lit section, although the closest lighting brackets were about six paces to either side of where they were standing. The walls appeared to be bare, made from the wax bricks that were common throughout Honeyland. However… what was this? She took a closer look at one particular section of the wall. Yes, it definitely looked like a thicker joint than any of the others. She pulled out her lantern and lit it, with the guard open. As she held it up to the suspicious joint, the little flame flickered inside.

Ha! Confirmation of something behind this wall, now just to find the trigger. She investigated the walls again. Nothing. She inspected the floor. Zilch. She looked at Tarnathien, who was leaning against the walls and seemed to be enjoying her process. “Any hints? I’ve got to be close, right?”

He just smiled back at her and mimed zipping his lips before shrugging at her. “Well, thanks for nothing then,” she quipped. “I’ll figure this out.” She turned to investigate the lighting brackets, but as she did, something caught her eye. As she turned to take a closer look, she lost sight of it, but it looked like… She ducked her head back and forth as she tried to catch sight of it again. Yes! There was a near invisible spider’s web strand hanging from the ceiling. Spotting it was one thing, trying to figure out exactly where it was and grabbing it was another. After swatting at the air for a minute or two, she finally grabbed it and gave a big heave.

With a deep rumbling, the stone wall in front of her slid up smoothly to reveal a shadowed figure waiting for them. As the light from the hallway revealed the figure, Beelinda was shocked to recognize Professor Hamber. “Ah, Beelinda. I was wondering when you might be invited to join us. Well done Tarnathien,” the kindly Professor beamed as he spoke. “Follow me then, we’ve got lots to discuss.”
